Purpose leashes
Handle (1-2' long) - used for close control taking your dog into places where you can't let them roam (stores, crowds etc) without having to tangle up in longer leashes. Handles also can be used for starting training your dog off-leash - you can grab handle to correct your dog, or let it go and it will hang free without tangling up in your dog's feet.
Tethering leash (2-4' long) - the leash with clips/carabines on the both sides for clipping to dog collar and your belt for hands free close control of your dog. It's being used for close monitoring the dog in specific environment, or starting off leash training - dog is still on leash, but both handler and the dog starting to get used to handler's free hands movements.
Regular leash (4-6' long) - regular leash for walking your dog, can be used for Rally training and trials, usually with handle.
Obedience leash (6' long) - required length of the leash for Obedience training, usually with handle.
Extended leash (10-16') - longer leashes used to allow the dog more roaming room. Mostly used for specific purpose like Scent Work, where handler needs to let dog have some roaming room while keeping dog under control. Can be with or without a handle.
Long line (20-30') - a very long line, usually used for Tracking, without the handle. It also can be used for teaching recall or any other skill where your dog has to come back to you, like fetch. Long line can be used as a safety measure for a dogs with a poor recall in open space public places like Eagle Islands. You can put a long line on your dog and let them roam, but if your dog takes off after something (people, dogs or other animals, birds etc) you don't have to run to catch your dog, but have 20-30' feet of leash behind your dog that is much easier to catch.
